I bought a Cherry Bomb 12" Glasspack Muffler and was surprised at how much it actually muffled the sound of my vehicle. I know that in some glasspacks, the packing is exposed because it is under a sheet of metal with holes in it, but on my Cherry Bomb Glasspack, there is a sheet of metal with holes in it and a solid piece of metal under it, so the packing must be under the solid piece of metal and not exposed. Does this make any difference in the sound of it? Will it get any louder after driving with it? Thanks. car insurance. Auto parts : Distributor Rotor Jaguar 1997. Distributor Rotor Adapter Jeep 1998. Pontiac . How to Adjust 2000 Saturn Rear Drum BrakesYear 2000 Saturn vehicles are equipped with self-adjusting rear drum brakes. But if you want to make sure your Saturn's brakes operate to their maximum efficiency, you need to manually adjust the brake shoes from time to time. The self-adjusting mechanism only works when the parking brake is applied after putting the vehicle in park. As you use your brakes, they will wear down a bit, causing a little space between the drum and the brake shoes. If you routinely adjust your rear drum brakes, you will keep the brakes in top condition longer. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Two wooden wedges Floor jack Jack stands Lug wrench Hammer Step by Step : 1 Release the parking brake. Put one wooden wedge behind each of the vehicle's front wheels to keep the car from rolling while you work on it. 2 Jack up the rear of the car using the floor jack until the wheels are off the ground. 3 Slide jack stands under the control arm next to each wheel, then lower the jack a little until the car is sitting firmly on the jack stands. 4 Take off the lug nuts using the lug wrench. Remove the wheel, and set it aside out of the way along with the lug nuts. 5 Remove the brake drums by twisting them off in a clockwise direction. If they are rusted on, strike with a hammer, twist a quarter-turn, then strike again. 6 Find the self-adjuster underneath the wheel cylinder. It is shaped like a star. Spread open the shoes a little by turning the self-adjuster, then slide the drums back onto the shoes. If the drum slides on easily, then you know the brakes are adjusted correctly. 7 Return the wheels to the car, and tighten the lug nuts hand-tight. Using the floor jack, lift up the car, and slide the jack stands out of the way. Lower the car to the ground. Engage the parking brake. The parking brake handle should only move a maximum of six clicks. 8 Retighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench, and remove the wooden wedges from behind the tires. Tips & Warnings Put on a respirator mask, and wash the brake shoes with soap and water after removing the drums. This will keep you and others from getting ill from brake dust.
Pontiac . How to Manually Adjust the Drum Brakes on a Kia SportageThe Kia Sportage is equipped with rear drum brakes. Drum brakes use brake shoes that contact the brake drum when the driver pushes the brake pedal, creating friction that brings the vehicle to a stop. The brake adjustment wheel adjusts the clearance between the shoes and the drum automatically, as the brake shoe friction material wears, using spring tension to draw the shoes closer to the drum. The adjustment wheel can also be used to manually adjust the shoe-to-drum clearance after a brake job has been done. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Brake spoon Flat head screwdriver Flashlight Step by Step : 1 Locate the brake drum for the side you will be adjusting. The brake drum is located directly behind the wheel hub. The wheel hub is bolted to the brake drums via the lug nuts. 2 Locate the adjustment window. The adjustment window is located in the back of the brake drum. There is a black rubber stopper inserted into the window that keeps water and road debris away from the brake assembly. 3 Remove the rubber stopper using a flat head screwdriver and applying outward pressure to the stopper. 4 Locate the adjustment wheel using a flashlight. The adjustment wheel will have teeth cut into it all the way around that are used to engage the brake spoon and allow for adjustment. 5 Engage the brake spoon with one of the teeth on the adjustment wheel and rotate the wheel clockwise until the shoes just contact the drum, moving from tooth to tooth as the wheel turns. 6 Reinstall the rubber stopper into the adjustment window by hand. Tips & Warnings Do not over-adjust the brake shoe-to-drum clearance. This will cause premature wear to the shoes, and you will have to perform another brake job sooner than necessary. Be careful that your fingers don't get in the way when applying the brake spoon to the adjustment wheel. You can pinch your fingers between the adjustment window and the brake spoon. Make sure to reinstall the rubber stopper. If the stopper is not reinstalled, the brake assembly will become corroded and will also require a brake job sooner than necessary. Combination Frenches When shopping for wrenches, you'll come across open-end wrenches and box-end wrenches, but the very best kind to get are combination wrenches, which have an open end and a closed end on each wrench (see Figure 2-4). These wrenches come in sets of several sizes, and each wrench is made to fit a nut of a specific size, whichever end you use. See the sidebar "How to use 155

Called offset wrenches, these are good for working in hard-to-reach spots. You may want to add a couple to your tool kit. The most useful offset wrench is the distributor wrench, shown in Figure 2-5, which you use to adjust your car's timing. (You need this tool only if your car has a non-electronic ignition system.) Be sure to get one to fit the distributor hold-down clamp on your vehicle. Part I: Getting Started. Figure 2-5: An offset distributor wrench is probably the most useful offset wrench. Pontiac . Alien (or hex) ufrenches Some of the screws or fastenings on your vehicle may have odd-shaped holes in the centers of their heads that require special Allen wrenches — L-shaped rods that fit into the holes (see Figure 2-7). If the center hole is hexagonal, the wrench you need is sometimes called a hex wrench. You can buy a set of assorted-sized Allen wrenches for under $15. Part I: Getting Started. Figure 2-7: Allen wrenches. Socket Frenches A good set of socket wrenches, shown in Figure 2-8, can really make the difference between enjoying your work and killing yourself over it. Socket wrenches come in sets for a wide variety of prices, depending on quality and how many there are in the set. Sets can include either a mix of SAE and metric sockets, all SAE, or all metric pieces. Unless you've decided to become a mechanic, you can buy an inexpensive set of basic socket wrenches suitable for your vehicle for less than $25. Figure 2-8: A socket wrench set. Pontiac . The metric sizes most often used are 10,11,12,13, and 14 mm. The word drive refers to the size of the square hole in each socket where it attaches to the ratchet handle. It's easy to remember that the smaller the drive, the smaller the job you use it for. A X-inch drive is for tiny areas; %-inch drive is for the next range of sizes, typically up to SAE % or 18 mm metric; &-inch drive is for up to SAE IK, or up to 25 mm; and other drives up to 2 inches are for really big jobs (you won't need one of these monsters). You can use adapters to convert sockets of one drive to fit handles of another drive. A spark plug socket: This is the large socket with a soft lining to hold the spark plug securely without damaging its soft jacket when you remove and insert it, or when you drop it on the floor by mistake. Spark plugs come in two sizes, so make sure to get the size that fits the spark plugs in your car. Your owner's manual may note the spark plug size. At least one ratchet handle, to which you can fit any of the sockets: Most sets have two or three handles with at least one adapter.
